What is Torque?

0

Torque is a force that, when applied to what object, causes a turning motion. Torque is used to open doors, tighten screws, rotate wheels, and ride see-saws. Although forces are used on all these objects, these forces do not cause the object to accelerate in a straight line, but instead to turn. Torque is calculated by multiplying the force that is applied to the object by the distance the force was from the axis of rotation. For example, if a force of 50 newtons is applied to a door (by pushing on the doorknob) and that force is applied one meter away from the axis of rotation (the hinges), the total amount of torque used to open the door would be 50 newton-meters.

Torque is a measure of rotational force applied to an object. For steel containers, calibrated torque is required to close the fittings of a closed head and the bolt ring of an open head. Torque can be measured in ft – lbs., inch – lbs., or neuton-meters.
