Hine did his work initially with a 5×7 view camera with rapid rectilinear lens, using a magnesium flash at night or indoors. He worked with glass plates, and later 4×5 sheet film. About 1920 he began using a 4×5 Graflex, adapted for either a five or eight inch lens.
