Standard Estonian is the official language and it’s used at Tartu Ülikool and other universities. Some classes at Tartu Ülikool are also taught in English (check out this website: http://www.ut.ee/en/65745). You may hear the southern dialect while in Tartu, but anyone you meet will understand the Tallinn dialect, and almost all printed material (books, newspapers, etc) are written in the Tallinn dialect as well.
