What role should America’s ideals play in its national security policy? ?
Ideals are always a motive for any kind of law or policy. In the case of national security one needs to balance the apporpriate things because several rights are in conflict. The right of the public to safety and the rights of inidviduals. The rights of individuals are not so absolutist that one can endager the public. Cetainly in wartime there was been rationing and various special measures to achieve an end. Economic health is subservient to general protection and safety.
