I selected my topic because I am an older adult and suffer from hypertension. I believe I suffer from this chronic illness due to the over consumption of unhealthy processed foods over many years. My poor eating habits starting in my teen years and quickly became habit forming continuing well into adulthood. Our society, young and old, are suffering from many chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer, obesity and a host of many others. I believe the saying you are what you eat. To prevent many chronic diseases from starting or managing the illness you have, you must give your body what it needs, good nutrition along with daily exercise. Clearly, a diet rich in complex carbohydrates- starches, and fibers- supports efforts to control body weight and prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and gi disorders.
