What will the primary welfare officers do?
Schools are responsible for developing the primary welfare officer’s position description (PDF – 109Kb) and in doing this, the materials produced by the Department may be a useful guide. Schools will be able to determine the exact duties of the primary welfare officer. The appointee will work within the school’s existing student wellbeing structures and have responsibility for areas such as: • Supporting management/coordination of the wellbeing needs of students who are at-risk of disengaging from school; • Participating in, supporting and/or promoting student wellbeing initiatives within the school, across networks and within the local community; • Promoting positive school environments, for example by building students’ self esteem, communication and social skills; • Linking students and their families to support services both within and external to the school; and • Developing productive family-school-agency partnerships.
