It’s not a race. It doesn’t have an exact start point. There are many different things. The first time someone stuck a paddle while in a river to power a grain mill would count. 1793 is a good one. An immigrant from England, Samuel Slater, brought English textile methods to America in 1789. In 1793, he started the Slater’s Mill at Pawtucket, Rhode Island to process cotton. 1798 is also a good time. Eli Whitney introduced Interchangeable parts to the US Army. Before then, all guns were custom made and had to be fixed by specialists. Whitney made 10 guns exactly the same using machined parts. The pieces of one gun could go on another. This allowed for the mass production of guns. Also, if a piece of a gun broke, you could take it out and put in a new one.
