When required, what class of medical certificate must a student pilot have?
It’s always best to get a first class medical before you become a student pilot if your intention is to fly for hire or "commercially" (airlines, flight instructor, banner tow, etc). If you can pass the first class medical exam the first time then you know you’re qualified for any type of flying. The first class medical then becomes second class after 6 months and third class after 1 year. You’ll have to renew at 2 years to continue as a private (not for hire or pay) pilot.
A. Third-class, although any class will suffice. Medical certificates are designated as first-class, second-class, or third-class. Generally, the first-class is designed for the airline transport pilot; the second-class for the commercial pilot; and the third-class for the student and private pilot.

If I have a physical disability, can I get a medical certificate? A. Yes. Medical certificates can be issued in many cases where physical disabilities are involved. Depending on the nature of the disability, you may have some operating limitations. If you have any questions, contact an FAA-authorized aviation medical examiner before beginning flight training. Q. Must I carry my medical certificate when I am flying solo? A. Yes.
