Where does the neutron for spitting of uranium 235 initially start and come from?
In a reactor there is usually a neutron source to kick start the chain reaction, however even if not there will always be spontaneous decay that will release 2 or 3 neutrons at a time, if you have enough uranium in close proximity (a critical mass) you will then get a chain reaction that you can moderate with control rods.
