Who can be the registered agent of a business entity in Virginia?
A "registered agent" is designated to receive important mail sent by the state, such as annual report statements, and tax documents sent by the state’s department of taxation. A registered agent must either be the physical address and name of an individual living in the state of incorporation or qualification with a valid street address (no PO Boxes) or a company such as MyLLC.com or IncorpServices.com, authorized to serve as an agent. The registered agent is designated to accept service of process on behalf of the corporation; when a company receives a Service of Process, this document is often delivered by local law enforcement. Most business owners do not want law enforcement to show up in front of customers, employees or neighbors to serve them notice that their company is being sued.
