Who will win the Associated Press Mr. Basketball?
The last two years it has basically been a foregone conclusion that Northland’s Jared Sullinger would be taking home the award, and he did. In 2008, it was another Ohio State Buckeye in William Buford of the now defunct, Toledo Libbey and ’07 it was Buckeye, Jon Diebler. O.J. Mayo captured the award in ’05 and ’06, while former OSU standout Jamar Butler was the winner in ’04. The Lebron James reign was from 2001-2003, and 2000 was the only year with two winners in Tony Stockman (OSU/Clemson) and Chester Mason (Miami, OH). The bottom line is this when there is a good player which has committed to Ohio State he wins the award. O.J. Mayo and Chester Mason were the only non-Buckeyes to win the award in the past decade. James didn’t attend college, so we exclude him though he likely would’ve attended Ohio State. This year there is nary and Ohio State commit or signee in the Classes of 2011 and 2012.
