Why did Jerry refer to himself as ‘Jerry Cougar Mellencamp’ in “The Stakeout”?

Jerry said this in response to having his cousin Artie Levine pronounced le-veen correct his pronunciation to le-vine. It’s a reference to John Cougar who changed his name to John Cougar Mellencamp after his first hit album.
