Why did we need an IVIg Programme?

In light of a world shortage in the supply of immunoglobulin products, a 2006 Department of Health (DH) review established the need for new arrangements for the procurement of immunoglobulin products so as to ensure an adequate supply of immunoglobulin for existing and new patients, as well as a national plan to provide guidance in the appropriate use of immunoglobulin products. In 2007 the Department of Health initiated a three-part demand management programme to ensure that supply is maintained for priority patients, even in times of shortage. The demand management programme consists of three parts: • National cross-specialty clinical guidelines for immunoglobulin usage • National demand management plan for appropriate use of immunoglobulin • National database to inform immunoglobulin demand modelling and allow reliable forecasting.
