Why do some Medeco keys have to be ordered and others can be made in minutes?
There are different levels of security offered by Medeco. The lower levels allow any locksmith to provide duplicate keys, but those keys must be sent away for and the customer is responsible for keeping the authorization card. If that card is lost, duplicate keys can no longer be made. The next levels of security only allow the locksmith that sold you the lock to provide duplicates. In this system, that locksmith’s lock uses a key blank that is unique to him/her. This locksmith also keeps records of authorized users and duplicates can br made in minutes. Both of these types of systems can be provided by York Lock & Key. The highest of all Medeco key systems is typically used in schools and government buildings. In these systems, the keys are made at the factory which also keeps record of who is authorized to request duplicate keys.
