Why Statue of Liberty is in Green color?
Hi 🙂 Lady Liberty is copper Copper tarnishes to a dark brown color when exposed to the outside world (take a look at your penny coins! – The new ones will be bright shiny copper – the older ones a dark brown color) It took a good 20 years for that copper on Lady Liberty to turn the green that it is today. This process is called Patination and the green color called a Patina. Copper does NOT rust – like the answerer above me suggests. the Patina is a protective layer that is developed- and this is one of the reasons that copper was chosen to make Lady Liberty, and Bartoldi intended it to turn that color. heres a useful site giving information on the patination process- including an animation of the color changing. http://www.copperinfo.co.uk/arch/colour-…
