At the moment, the only type of testosterone that is officially licensed in the UK for use in women are small implants. This means that they have been fully tested in women, and have gone through the rigorous requirements of the licensing authority. Gels and patches, though officially licensed for use in men, have yet to be licensed for women, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t be used – it just means they haven’t been fully tested, and if a doctor prescribes them, he must take on more responsibility than he does for licensed products. This is because the doses of testosterone that are appropriate for women are far lower than those used in men, and the exact amount that is beneficial in women is still being investigated.
