A basin wrench has spring loaded jaws that close when turning pressure is applied to the nut connecting the pipes (or holding the faucet) to the hard to reach underside of the faucet behind the sink. The jaws only work in one direction, but they flip from one side to the other, to loosen or tighten, depending on whichever you desire to do.
