What are some reasons prostitution should be illegal?
I think you’ve got the wrong side of that debate, but sometimes the wrong side can be more fun to argue. I’d stay away from the STD argument. You’ll open yourself up to a very strong counterpoint that STD’s would be much less likely to spread if prostitution were legalized because you could distribute condoms to prostitutes and require them to get tested on a regular basis. You could also protect them from violence a lot better. I think you have to hit the moral/family values issues hard. Argue that condoning prostitution would encourage infidelity in marriage, promote the objectification of women, and prevent the authorities from helping young women who are exercising their “right” to sell their bodies. Also argue that it would be harder to prosecute sex traffickers who force women – especially immigrants – into prostitution because the women could be trained and intimidated to say they are willing participants.
