A 1991 BMW 525i E34 has a M50 engine in it. It does not have VANOS, VANOS being variable valve timing, those showed up in the 1993 model year. The M50 has a DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder and 189 horsepower. It has a timing chain rather than a belt that was the achilles heal of the older M20 engine that was put in the 89-90 E34 525i. The M-tech sport kit on a 525 is usually just different exterior trim/interior trim and wheels.
