Answer Dear Julie, Esotropia falls into 2 different categories- accommodative and non-accommodative. Accommodative esotropia is a result of a positive power refractive error (i.e. your daughter requires strong positive power eye glasses). In case the power is inadequately prescribed, the esotropia may resurface. Some attempts to over correct the glasses (prescribe higher than required positive power) also do bring in results in some cases. The most important aspect of this type is that at least once a year, the optometrist needs to re-check her eye glasses with eye drops instilled in the eyes prior to testing. Non-accommodative esotropia does not usually respond well to any other treatment than surgery. Possibly a revision surgery may be in order. An alternate that you need to discuss with your eye doc is the possibility of use of prisms in spectacle to force the eyes to maintain their position.
