Answer Hello Richelle The best way to go is with concrete caissons poured to a depth of: below frost line. They should have two strands of #4 rebar installed in them. The top of the concrete should be extended above ground by 6″ minimum. The posts should be attached to the top of the concrete, and should be anchored to the concrete with proper base plates. You should never install support posts in the concrete pour. They would collect moisture and rot out quickly. They would also be limited in their hold strength. The thought of attachment to above ground pads, is only an option if the load is limited and the soil conditions are perfect for the situation. You would need to contact your county building department to find out the minimum depth to be below frost line. My guess would be:48″… perhaps similar to Jefferson County Colorado.
