Are 3M Littmann stethoscopes a good choice for a new student?

Yes. There are several levels of 3M Littmann scopes; depending on whether you are talking nursing, med student or beyond. For nursing the regular littmannn is fine. A med student may want the littmann cardiology scope due to its acoustics, that is the one I use–it is very comfortable in the ears, great acoustics and fairly lightweight to tote around (I also use the littmann pediatric scope). My husband likes the Hewlett Packard (HP). Both are excelent. A MD will need a scope with both a bell and a diaphragm head; general nursing can use just the diaphragm. There is no need to get a very pricey, fancy scope if that level is not needed (and I’ve had at least 5 stolen).
