Are celebrity news and gossip magazines basically little more than picture books for adults?

They seem to be the reading material of choice at the gym, and at work most of the time the month-old gossip magazine is chosen over the daily newspaper. What I find entertaining is how quickly the pages get thumbed through, the reader rarely pausing longer than it takes to look at the pictures.
