Are certified organic farms inspected by the government?
Organic certification requires that an organic farmer submit an organic system plan annually, and have their organic farm fields and certified organic processing facilities inspected once a year. Inspectors verify that certified organic practices such as long-term soil management, buffers between organic farms and neighboring conventional farms, and recordkeeping are being followed and maintained. Certified organic processing inspections by USDA officials include a review of the organic facility’s cleaning and pest control methods, ingredient transportation and storage, and recordkeeping and audit control.
