Are dental sealants necessary?

If your son is 8 years old, he may possibly have his adult first molars in, and in that case at my office we sometimes reccomend sealants for children who have deeper grooves on those back molars. The 1st molars are some of the oldest teeth in the body since they come in at such a young age and you obviously give them a good workout with chewing, so keeping them decay free ffor as long as possible if always a good thing. Sealants only help the chewing surfaces of the teeth so decay inbetween the molars is still possible. But in the end if your doctor wants to do the sealants only on baby teeth I would wait.
