Are hernias a problem after surgery?
Unfortunately, the most common postoperative complication after gastric bypass surgery is the occurrence of an incisional hernia. A hernia develops in a weak spot in the abdominal wall in the incision area. These usually require re-operation to stitch the weak area closed so that the bulge is eliminated. The chance of developing a hernia after surgery is about 15-20%.
