Are potassium based salt substitutes safe?

Yup, avoid the salt substitutes. They would probably be fine in very small amounts, but messing with potassium levels could potentially be more harmful than salt. I haven’t heard anything from doctors, but my lecturer mentioned it in pharmacy school. Too much (or too little) potassium can cause a whole bunch of problems, especially with your heart, eg irregular heart beat, heart failure. The problem with the salt is that it can raise your blood pressure. The best plan is to avoid as much salt as possible. Food might taste weird without it for a little while, but after a while you won’t miss it!
