The ozone layer in the upper part of the atmosphere (good ozone) protects the earth from the sun’s harmful untraviolet rays. Ground level ozone (bad ozone) is formed when hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides react with sunlight. Ground level ozone is the major contributor to smog and can be extremely harmful to public health when levels are too high. The elderly, young children, asthma sufferes and people who are active outdoors are most at risk to the dangers of gound level ozone. Ground level ozone is most common between the months of April and October.
