Are there clinical tests that demonstrate the efficacy of scalp acupuncture?
Chinese clinical reports indicate a high degree of effectiveness. Good results were attained in cases where body acupuncture had not been sufficiently effective. Clinical reports of 2,917 cases of hemiplegia treated in 34 Chinese clinics reveal an effective rate of 94.5%, with58.9% markedly improved. In an article on scalp acupuncture for hemiplegia of 110 cases, 29 were essentially cured, with mobility of limbs recovered. Analysis of the 110 cases showed that the location, number and extent of the cerebral lesions correlated closely with the therapeutic effects, and early institution of the acupuncture treatment led to better results. In a report on pseudobulbar paralysis in which scalp acupuncture and body acupuncture were combined the treatment was effective in all 28 cases. 19 cases (68%) were cured and 9 cases (32%) were markedly effective.
