According to Dr. Helms, ethyl-mercury is the form of mercury found in thimerosal, a preservative that was used in vaccines. Thimerosal was added to the vaccines because it kills bacteria. There has been a long-standing debate as to whether the small amounts of mercury found in vaccines is toxic to some individuals. However, since 1999, it has been taken out of most vaccines. Studies show there is no link between vaccines and autism. In Japan they stopped giving Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) shots and still autism was rising. There was a spike in 2004 and 2005, Dr. Helms said. Dr. Helms suggests that there might still be a link between autism and environmental, or methyl-mercury, which is made by microorganisms in water and soil. So why do some people get autism?
