She was concerned that they were a hotbed for bacteria. My own collection of wooden spoons is scarred and smooth with years of use, and my favorite cutting board is probably 14 years old, yet still hasn’t split and cracked like subsequent boards I’ve purchased. I’m pretty sure I’ve never gotten food poisoning from using wooden spoons and cutting boards, and you’re not likely to, either wood is naturally antibacterial (some say, even moreso than plastic), so it’s an excellent choice when it comes to kitchen equipment.
