Bruce, Well, from my point of view as a native west Michigander, why you’d grow anything else but cherries or grapes is beyond me 🙂 But sure, those crops do very well in that climate and soil. Apples do very well, also. There are also opportunities for strawberries, blueberries, pears, apricots, and many vegetables (we used to grow asparagus). Now I’m hungry! Seriously, this is really a good question. I’d start with talking to the local MSU Agricultural Extension office for your county. It’s not clear if you’re actually in or just near Grand Traverse Co., so you can look up your local Ag Extension office information at the first link below. The MSU Ag Extension offices are in existence just to help people with this kind of question. Best of all, they’re free (tax-supported) as part of MSU’s public university charter.
