• Once you have expressed an interest in intercountry adoption, you and your partner (where appropriate) will be invited to take part in a preparation course, usually of 3 days’ duration, by your local authority or adoption agency. The course will cover issues and questions arising from intercountry adoption, and you will be asked to evaluate what you feel you have learnt on each day. • If you still wish to proceed with the adoption application, you will then have an assessment carried out on you by the local authority/ adoption agency. This process will involve detailed interviews with a social worker; interviews between the social worker and your nominated referees; assessment of your relationships with your family (including the development of any other children you may have) and your spouse/partner; your employment and economic status; the standard of living in your home; medical reports and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks.
