Orcas are found throughout the world but are most concentrated in the northern latitudes and in areas of high biological production. The J, K and L pods are members of the southern resident community. Together, they share the same dialects or languages, the same feeding strategies and the same social behaviors. The northern resident community, made up of 13 pods, is believed to a distinct social and breeding population. It is separated geographically from the southern community by the Malaspina Strait, about halfway up Vancouver Island. In addition, there is a transient community of 17 pods that cover all the territory of the northern and southern communities and sometimes travel as far north as Alaska and south to the California Coast. One of the major differences between the two resident communities and the transients are that the residents almost always eat fish, whereas the transients prey mainly on seals and sea lions.
