Can a wisdom tooth cause an abscess?

Even if your wisdom tooth hasn’t come through, it can still become decayed, cause abscess and infections. I actually have a wisdom tooth that needs to come out because of that exact problem. I was shocked to learn that even though it is deep under the gums, any tiny particle can get down there and cause decay. Bummer! Hope you aren’t in too much pain. I know how miserable it can be!

Yes, a wisdom tooth can cause an abscess. It can be infected, either by the root canals you had or other ways. It’s good you’re going back to the doctor. If an abscess becomes septic, it gets into your blood stream and goes upwards toward the brain. People have died from that, but they didn’t go and seek medical help. I think maybe you’d best have the tooth pulled, it might be that your wisdom tooth is just rotting away, so to speak. My dad’s did, though he brushed it and all. It’s like the nerve or blood supply to it went bad and it got abscessed. Sorry you’re in such pain. Abscesses are horrible, I’m told. Feel better!
