The story is about revenge for an insult. The main character, Montresor, feels that his friend Fortuno has insulted him in some way (he never explains how) and decides to murder Fortuno by burying him alive. Montresor lures him down into the tunnels below the buildings by promising him that there is a cask of very rare wine (amontillado) there. Montresor mentions that his family crest – a foot crushing a biting snake, with the motto “No one touches me with impunity” – is all about revenge. He gets Fortuno drunk and leads him into the dank catacombs, and has no trouble chaining him inside a small room. Montresor then begins to seal up the room with bricks, stopping every so often to mock Fortuno. He puts in the last brick and leaves. At the end, Montresor says that it has been fifty years since the murder and he has never been caught. He does not appear to be remorseful.
