JEZ SPINKS tests the contenders. As famous pieces of paper go, it doesn’t quite carry the historical significance of the Magna Carta or the Dead Sea scrolls. Yet an internal memo written by a Volkswagen test engineer in 1973 sowed the seed for a car that would become a performance icon. The memo was sent to only a handful of people and proposed a sporty variant of a new model due to launch under the name “Golf” the following year. Just two fellow members of VW’s research and development department and the company’s PR man saw merit in the concept.
