Can Autism Spectrum Disorders be cured?
There are two major sides to answer this question. One group has scientists, doctors and parents who believe autism is curable. The basis of their argument is that autism is caused by environmental factors which can be reduced or eliminated. The other group also consists of scientists, doctors and parents who believe autism is genetic and therefore not curable.
Jenny McCarthy, actress and mother of an autistic son, is a vocal proponent autism being caused by environmental factors. She has aligned herself with a project called called Defeat Autism Now (DAN) which is part of the Autism Research Institute (ARI).
According to ARI website, Bernard Rimland, Ph.D. founded the non-profit organization nearly three decades ago to “research that makes a difference, “focusing on studies that translate into immediate benefits for today’s generation of children and adults with autism."
DAN is a conference which presents information to parents and experts about the newest research and treatments which take a holistic approach to autism, both looking for the underlying causes and the treatment. Some of these treatments include detoxification through a Gluten-Free and Casesin Free diets.
The second camp is the majority of the medical doctors and researchers and an unknown amount of parents point to a large number of studies linking autism to genetics. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention a majority of the funding available for research in autism is for looking for the underlying causes in a person’s DNA, chromosomes, or neurology (brain).
Proponents of genetics as the root of autism treat the symptoms of autism through behavior modification, and therapies (speech and language, occupational, physical). Apparently politicians rely upon information from the majority of the medical community as state legislatures are beginning to mandate insurance companies cover these therapies up to $35 thousand a year.
Autism Speaks, is another non-profit organization founded by Bob and Suzanne Wright. Bob was the CEO of NBC Network and used his influence to raise awareness for autism’s alarming rise. Autism Speaks appears to be middle of the road open to creditable research and proven treatments.
Extensive research continues in search of a cure for Autism Spectrum Disorders. With appropriate support people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder can develop many skills and abilities throughout their life. Intervention should be implemented as early as possible in order to maximise development. Different types of intervention approaches available include: sensory integration, alternative and augmentative communication, speech and language therapy, facilitated communication, music therapy, play therapy, behavioural interventions, vitamins and supplements, nutritional approaches, academic support and social skill interventions.
