Can designer dogs become purebreds?
No, they will never be considered a pure bred, they are mutts, mixed breeds, even if the parents on both sides are pure breds, the pups are not, they are cross bred with 2 different breeds..and cannot be registered… and no, just because a dog is a Pure Bred and registered by the AKC does not make it any better than any other dog in the world, except, the AKC recognized breeds are able to be shown, whereas a mutt cannot be……
They will never be considered purebred in AKC standards- the AKC will NOT recognize any breed that is a result of two already recognized breeds mating together. Also, it will be difficult to determine & meet any breed standards, as there is no reliability when it comes to the coat type and color with mixes. However, there are many less than perfect kennel clubs out there, that will register just about anything- they may consider them purebred, however they would also register my MinPin as a Boxer if I mailed them a check for $50.
Simply breeding two different purebred dogs does not make it a “breed”. Doesn’t matter if you decide to call it a “designer breed”; it is NOT a breed, period. BREEDS are not referred to as mutts. MUTTS are referred to as mutts. A breed is a breed when it predictably passes on UNIFORM traits to its offspring. Don’t use your pets to conduct experiments.
I doubt it only because the AKC is a very old club that has spent generations developing and accepting dog breeds from all over the country. Although they can be cute each small dog breed brings special characteristics to that “breed”. If AKC does accept a designer breed as a purebred it probably won’t be in my lifetime!
