Can I, as an experienced teacher from out-of-state, qualify for the Professional Teacher Certificate without enrolling in a program? What about reciprocity?
Currently, reciprocity agreements cover only the first level of certification, not the advanced level. There is a reciprocity agreement with Oregon. Teachers who have earned the Oregon Continuing Teaching License since 1999 qualify for the Professional Certificate. If you have entered Washington with five or more years of successful teaching you may qualify for the Experienced Educator Option. In that option, you will register for the first seminar in ProCert called the Pre-Assessment Seminar. During this seminar you will gather evidence and develop a portfolio to demonstrate competency of all 12 ProCert criteria. If you do demonstrate all these competencies, you will not need to take the remainder of the program. If there are any gaps, you will need to do a modified ProCert program.
