You can visit the American embassy in Canada or Mexico – it depends on what coast you’re on, but there is an American embassy in Ottawa, Canada and one in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. This is where you normally have to renew your visa – I am of Romanian nationality, though an American citizen, but I have accompanied my Moldovan friends and boyfriend to Canada on more than one occasion so they could renew their F-1 student visas. Please keep in mind – if your visa is expired, there are many new laws recently passed by the USCIS and Department of State. They may deny your visa in Canada, and you will be unable to return to the U.S. Additionally, if you overstayed on your visa, and floated in the States as a non-status immigrant, you could be considered illegal and may have to return to Russia and apply for the visa there. Usually you only have to return to your home country if you are CHANGING your status, not renewing it, but I don’t understand how you have student status until 2012

An F-1 visa allows you to enter the country. As long as you are maintaining your student status you are legal. Don’t leave the country or you will have to get a new visa. Talk to your foreign student office(or whatever it is called at your school) and make sure you are still in status. Good Luck!

I think that you will need to go back to Russia. But you need to talk to your school’s international students office for help. It is odd that your visa expired during your studies. Of course, you are now in the US illegally and you need to be very careful.
