Can I restore a backup of a linux server (virtual machine) to a different folder, rename it, and give it a new IP address?
Yes – not a problem. Just keep in mind, when you restore a copy of a VMDK to make a new VM, it is sometimes better to make a new VMX (VM) and point to the newly restored VMDK as an existing disk. When we restore a VMX file, we do not massage it in any way. So, if you do restore the VMX, make sure you check the VM configuration in the VI3 client – especially if you rename the paths for VMDKs. Also, if you restore a copy of a VMX and register it, VMware will ask you about the UUID. If the VM is the same VM you are restoring, the choose KEEP. If you are restoring a VMX to make a new copy of a VM, then choose MAKE NEW.
