Can I substitute soy yogurt for whipping cream in a pie recipe?

Probably, I doubt it would be problematic IN the pie , although it will affect the taste as yogurt is more tangy than cream. You could also get some vegan cream cheese or sour cream and blend it with a bit of soy milk, or just blend up some silken tofu. If you are looking for whipped cream to put on top, it is easy to find non-dairy topping in the spray cans – it’s made with a modified oil product. Come to think of it, it you wanted to, you could purchase a modified oil topping – such as Cool Whip or something- and blend that with soymilk for inside the pie as well.

Since you only use the whipping cream to top the pie after it is baked, you could use anything you enjoy on top of the pie. I can’t imagine yogurt on top of a pumpkin pie myself, but go for it if you like that. If you are talking about substituting the evaporated milk that is used in the pie mixture, then I don’t know that soy yogurt would work as you are actually making a custard filling that is flavored with the pumpkin. I don’t know how the yogurt would bond with the other ingredients. Did you try this recipe for lactose-free pumpkin pie?
