Can I use liquid paper (white out) to mark the column after measurement?

Yes. Marking the column helps to make sure that the correct position is used when the column is installed into the burner. Alternatively, a small septum positioned on the column can help hold the column in place. The septum should be small enough (~4 mm diameter) to allow your fingers to get around it and still allow you to tighten the nut without moving its position on the column.
