Can I use special characters or formatting in the online application?

The online application form currently accepts only plain text entries for your essays and other information. Our readers are aware of this and will not penalize you for your formatting. After all, we are interested in how you think and explain your ideas, not in whether you always use italics in the right place! If you are cutting and pasting yyour essays from a word processor document, some special characters may not appear correctly. Be sure to carefully review your text as it appears in the online application to make sure it appears acceptably. Again, our readers are aware of this limitation in the submission format and will not begrudge you a missing accent or symbol. If some special characters or other features are crucial to a part of your submission, you may still apply using the postal application. If your only worry is about the application `looking nice,’ we still prefer that you apply online.
