Can medical marijuana be prescribed by a doctor?

Not in America. Marijuana remains on Schedule I of the US Food and Drug Administrations list of controlled substances. That means it is illegal to possess, and therefore cannot be prescribed. The synthetic version, Marinol is approved by the FDA and is available by prescription. Some states have laws allowing for the prescription and distribution of marijuana to qualified patients, so people in lawful possession in those states will not be prosecuted at the state level. However, all Americans, regardless of state statutes are subject to federal prosecution for possession of a controlled substance, whether prescribed or not.
