Can medical students design their ophthalmology programme?
Students are major participants in the ophthalmology programme but it is usually designed solely by faculty. This study investigated whether a student-designed programme would differ from the existing one in our department. Fifty final- year medical students and the seven ophthalmologists in the study town completed questionnaires on the relevance of ophthalmology at undergraduate level, learning objectives, timing, length and content of the ophthalmology programme. The student-designed programme required more frequent postings and greater correlation of ocular with systemic disease. It was concluded that students can make a very meaningful contribution to programme design.
