Can members continue to participate in the SDB Plan if they are not in receipt of a pension?

Members released with 5 or more years of continuous service, not in receipt of a pension, may elect to become a SDB Plan participant. An election to remain a SDB participant must be completed and received at DCFPS within 1 year prior to their release date, or within 30 days after release. The contributions to the SDB Plan are calculated differently than those of CF members and pensioners. The value of the SDB equals twice the salary at release, rounded up to the nearest $250, if the salary is not a multiple of $250. The amount of the premiums, which are paid in a lump sum in advance, remain the same until age 61, at which time the premiums start to reduce by 10 percent of the original amount each year, until they have reduced to zero. Participation in the plan ceases at that time.
