Can mitosis and meiosis occur in bacteria? Why or why not?
No, think about it. Bacteria is not a eukaryote thus it does not have the defined nucleus (w/ DNA & RNA) which will determine / or facilitate whether meosis or mitosis will occur. In regard to mitosis this will occur in all other cells besides sex cells. Of course meosis occurs only in sex cells. Rule out bacteria just on the ability to be affiliated with a sex cell. Only eukaryotes would be able to be affiliated with sex cells since it would require DNA to determine the traits / genes / etc. of the sex cells which could result in offspring. ______________________________________… From Wikipedia: Bacteria and archaea reproduce through asexual reproduction, usually by binary fission or budding. Genetic exchange and recombination still occur, but this is a form of horizontal gene transfer and is not a replicative process, simply involving DNA being transferred between two cells, as in bacterial conjugation.
