Can the stoma (pouch outlet) narrow down and cause vomiting?
Patients heal at different rates and scar differently. In a few patients, (less than 5%) scarring at the pouch’s outlet can cause their outlet to narrow. This is called Stomal Stenosis, or Stricture, and is usually managed by endoscopic dilatation by a gastroenterologist. If this is going to occur it usually happens within the first three months after surgery. Those patients who are smokers, or exposed to second hand smoke, are prone to this occuring to a more severe degree and on a long term basis.
